Biography


Aşye Zarakol’s research is at the intersection of historical sociology and IR, focusing on East-West relations, history and future of world order(s), conceptualisations of modernity and sovereignty, rising and declining powers, and Turkish politics in a comparative perspective.

Her articles have appeared in journals such as International Organization, American Political Science Review, International Affairs, International Theory.

She is the 2023 recipient of the Rahmi M. Koç Medal of Science, given annually to one scholar of Turkish origin under 50 for outstanding contributions to their discipline.

Her most recent book “Before the West: the Rise and Fall of Eastern World Orders” was published in March 2022 by Cambridge University Press and has won six book prizes to date including the 2024 John Ruggie Annual Best Book Award from the International Studies Association and the 2023 Allan Sharlin Memorial Book Award.
