Akın Öngör served as the Board Representative of Garanti Bank until 2003, and held the position of Chairman of the Board for Garanti Bank International, Garanti Moscow, Garanti Insurance, and Garanti Technology during that period. He also served as the Chairman of the Turkish American Business Council and was a board member of the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts. In 1994, he received the METU commendation award, and in 1999, he was honored with the "METU Distinguished Service Award". In 2009, he was awarded the "Foundation Person" award by the Prime Ministry Foundations General Directorate. He currently serves as the President of the CEO Club. Akın Öngör is a trustee member of WWF Turkey, Boğaziçi University Foundation, and TED Istanbul College Foundation. He has authored a book titled "ia orana," sharing memories of the Pacific Ocean, and another book titled "Benden Sonra Devam," narrating the remarkable success story during his tenure as the CEO of Garanti Bank.
