Biography


Selin Sayek Böke was born in 1972. She completed her primary education at Çankaya Primary School and her secondary education at TED Ankara College in 1989.

She graduated with a bachelor's degree in Economics from Middle East Technical University (METU) in 1993. Between 1993 and 1999, she pursued graduate studies (master’s and doctoral) in Economics at Duke University, where she also taught courses and worked as a consultant for World Bank projects. In 1999, she received her PhD in Economics from Duke University.

Between 1999 and 2001, she worked as an Assistant Professor in the Economics Department at Bentley University. From 2001 to 2003, she served as an Economist at the Washington DC office of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). During this period, she also taught as a Visiting Faculty member at Georgetown University.

From 2003 to 2014, she was a faculty member in the Economics Department at Bilkent University, and she was promoted to Associate Professor in 2010. Between 2011 and 2014, she served as the Head of the Economics Department at Bilkent University, and from 2013 to 2014, she was the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Administrative, and Social Sciences.

Between 2011 and 2014, she was a member of the Advisory Board of the TÜBİTAK Social Sciences Research Group (SOBAG). Her scientific work has been published in numerous international and national journals and books. Due to her internationally distinguished research on the effects and determinants of foreign direct investment in international economics, she received the TÜBİTAK Encouragement Award in 2010, the "Excellence Award in Global Economic Affairs" from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy in Germany in 2007, and the Mustafa Parlar Foundation Encouragement Award in 2011. She has also led numerous TÜBİTAK research projects. She is a founding member of the Füsun Sayek Health and Education Development Association.

Selin Sayek Böke was elected to the Party Assembly of the Republican People's Party (CHP) during its 18th Extraordinary Congress in 2014, the 35th Ordinary Congress in 2016, the 36th Ordinary Congress in 2018, the 37th Ordinary Congress in 2020, and the 38th Ordinary Congress in 2023. Between 2014 and 2017, she served as the Deputy Chairperson of the CHP responsible for Economic Policies. She was the Party Spokesperson between 2016 and 2017 and served as the Secretary-General of the CHP from 2020 to 2023. After the 2023 CHP 38th Ordinary Congress, she was re-elected as the Secretary-General.

During the 25th, 26th, and 27th terms, she served as a Member of Parliament for İzmir, a member of the Planning and Budget Committee of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM), and as a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). She held the position of Chairperson of the Social Affairs, Health, and Sustainable Development Committee and Deputy Leader of the Socialist Group in PACE. She was honored with an honorary membership diploma and the Parliamentary Assembly medal by PACE. Böke is actively involved in managing the relations between the Socialist International and the PACE Socialist Group.
