Berkun Oya was born in 1977 in Bursa. He graduated from the Theater Department of Mimar Sinan University State Conservatory in 1998. In 1999, he founded the Krek Theater Group and wrote and staged numerous plays, including "Dünyada Karşılaşmış Gibi," which premiered in 2019. Adaptations of the television series for which he served as a screenwriter have been produced in the USA, Russia, Spain, and the Netherlands, and the shows have been sold as ready-made formats to over 20 countries.
In 2003, as the youngest writer invited by the Istanbul State Theater, he adapted Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoğlu's novel "Yaban" into a play. He produced, hosted, and directed the TV programs "Defakto," which aired on CNN Türk in 2003, and "Infoman," which aired on NTV in 2005. His first film, "İyi Seneler Londra" (2007), was showcased as the opening film at the European Independent Film Festival ECU 2008 and won him the "Best Director" award at the Strasbourg International Film Festival.
Berkun Oya was the first playwright from Turkey invited to the Royal Court Theater Residency program in London. In 2011, he received the Best European Playwright award at the Heidelberg Stückemarkt Theater Festival for his play "Güzel Şeyler Bizim Tarafta." After writing, directing, and producing the Netflix Original Series "Bir Başkadır (Ethos)" in 2020, he received the Global Storytelling Award from America Abroad Media. He also served on the International Jury at Series Mania 2022. His latest feature film, "Cici," was released in 2022, and the Netflix Original series "Kuvvetli Bir Alkış" premiered in 2024.
