Born in Istanbul, Nilay Ornek began working at Sabah newspaper when she was in university, later on serving as the Editor for 5 years.

She moved on to Milliyet in 2000, working there for 8 years as an editor and writer.

She studied at Rutgers University in the United States while at Milliyet. She was awarded the Knight Wallace Fellows journalism scholarship.

In 2008 she started working at Haberturk, first serving as the assistant editor and then the weekend supplements editor. She moved on to Aksam newspaper as the supplements editor and then to as the editor in chief.

She hosted “Sehirli Sofralar” on Turkmax Gurme (Bein Gurme) for 2.5 years.

She was a columnist at Sozcu’s Sik for 2 years.

She published her first book “Butun Iyiler Biraz Kuskundur” in 2017 and her second book “Her Umut Ortak Arar” in 2019.

She has her own column at Kafa magazine.

She is the host of the podcast series “Nasil Olunur?”
